Skanska’s $163M New York Waterfront Connector Project Creates Demand for Construction Equipment Parts

Skanska has secured a $163 million contract from the New York City Department of Design and Construction to deliver the East Side Greenway 14th Street Connector in Manhattan, New York. The project aims to close an important gap in the city's waterfront greenway network by creating a continuous connection between East River Park and Captain Patrick J. Brown Walk. It represents a significant investment in urban transportation and public infrastructure.

The development will include a new esplanade along the East River, featuring a shared pedestrian and bicycle path, upgraded landscaping, lighting, seating and other public amenities. Skanska will work with Claire Weisz Architects (WXY) on the design and engineering. The project also involves constructing foundations, piers and a structural superstructure to support the over-water section of the greenway.

Design work is expected to begin shortly, with construction scheduled to start in early 2028. Completion is targeted for the end of 2030. The project will require careful coordination with existing waterfront infrastructure and utilities, including facilities operated by Con Edison.

Building a waterfront structure in a dense urban environment presents several construction challenges. Site preparation, foundation excavation, material handling and utility work may require excavators, bulldozers, wheel loaders and other heavy machinery. Equipment will need to operate efficiently in restricted spaces while supporting complex civil engineering activities.

For contractors, reliable machinery is essential to maintaining construction schedules. Repeated excavation, ground preparation and material handling can place considerable stress on equipment, particularly its undercarriage system. Track chains, bottom rollers, carrier rollers, idlers and drive sprockets are exposed to friction, impact and continuous movement during demanding operations.

Worn undercarriage components can reduce machine stability, affect traction and increase maintenance costs. Regular inspections, correct track tension and timely replacement of damaged parts help prevent unexpected breakdowns. Selecting durable replacement components that match the equipment model and working conditions is also important for extending machine service life.

FL supplies a comprehensive range of excavator and bulldozer undercarriage parts, including track chains, bottom rollers, top rollers, carrier rollers, idlers, drive sprockets, steel tracks and track adjusters. With precision machining and heat treatment processes, FL focuses on delivering reliable components for construction, mining, roadbuilding and infrastructure projects.

As New York continues investing in waterfront improvements and urban mobility, dependable construction machinery will remain important to delivering complex infrastructure projects. Contractors, equipment dealers and maintenance teams can improve fleet readiness by planning parts replacement and sourcing quality components in advance.

Contact FL to discuss your equipment models and find suitable undercarriage parts for demanding construction and infrastructure applications.
